The world's first dual anti-drug, Faricimab, in ophthalmology, has been clinically applied by He Eye Specialist Hospital.

Recently, He Eye Specialist Hospital achieved a milestone by administering the first injection of the innovative drug Lucentis® (Brolucizumab, a bispecific antibody) for retinal diseases in the northeastern region of China. Retinal diseases are the most common irreversible blinding eye conditions. Among these, diabetic macular edema (DME) and neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) are the main types of retinal diseases. Brolucizumab, developed by Roche Pharmaceuticals in ophthalmology, is the world's first intraocular injection of a bispecific antibody. The drug was officially approved for the treatment of DME and nAMD in China at the end of 2023. It is understood that intraocular injection of anti-VEGF drugs is the preferred treatment for various common retinal diseases. However, previous anti-VEGF treatments required monthly injections for several consecutive months, leading to poor compliance among retinal disease patients in China. Meanwhile, most existing anti-VEGF drugs on the market target a single pathway, whereas retinal diseases are multifactorial, meaning that targeting only a single causative factor, such as the VEGF family, has certain limitations in clinical practice. In comparison to traditional treatment methods, brolucizumab can inhibit neovascularization while enhancing vascular stability. Moreover, the injection interval for patients can be extended to 3 to 4 months, allowing patients to achieve the same or even better treatment outcomes with fewer treatment sessions. This improves long-term visual benefits and enhances patients' quality of life.

On March 14th, three patients received brolucizumab injections at both He Eye Specialist Hospital in Shenyang and He Eye Specialist Hospital in Dalian. The entire process was smooth, and the patients responded well to the treatment.
