Professor Connaught from Queen's University, UK visits He University

On April 19, 2024, Professor Connaught from Queen's University in the United Kingdom was invited to visit He University in Liaoning. After a profound exchange with Professor Yu Sile from our school, Professor Connaught was invited to be a guest speaker at the "Face-to-Face with Experts" lecture series. More than 200 students from various disciplines including clinical medicine, optometry, and ophthalmology participated in the event and had the opportunity to interact with Professor Connaught in person.

Professor Connaught is a professor at the Medical School of Queen's University Belfast in the United Kingdom. He also serves as the Global Research Advisor for Orbis International and a visiting professor at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University. He is a globally renowned ophthalmologist with expertise in various areas, including global eye health, cataracts, glaucoma, and refractive errors. He has published over 300 academic papers and currently holds positions as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Ophthalmology and an editorial board member of "The Epidemiology of Eye Disease."

Interview Sharing

At the event, Professor Yu Sile represented the students and conducted an interview with Professor Connaught, covering topics such as higher education, research directions, and personal growth plans for students.

Professor Yu Sile: Professor Connaught, you graduated from a top-tier institution and are considered a top student in my eyes. Could you share some study tips with us?

Professor Connaught: This is an important question, especially for young people. The key to being a good learner lies in curiosity. If you have a curious mind about the things you want to learn, you will excel in your studies. Interest is the first teacher of learning. I greatly admire Confucius and Mencius from China. Confucius said, "In the company of three, I am sure to find something to learn." This means that anyone can be your teacher, and life provides us with many learning opportunities. Each day presents numerous chances to learn.

Professor Yu Sile: Speaking of learning, writing papers is a crucial step for every student. You have published many papers both domestically and internationally. Could you share some experiences in writing papers with us?

Professor Connaught: To write a good paper, you need to first identify the core conclusions and determine what is most important in your content. Ask yourself why readers would be interested in your article. The next step is to organize your data and create clear and concise tables. Avoid being verbose and convoluted in your language. Outlining is very important, and you should create a simple outline for each step. Master the art of writing abstracts to allow readers to grasp the essence of your article in the shortest time possible. Only by following these steps can you produce a good paper.

Professor Yu Sile: Today's exchange with you has left a deep impression on me. It reminds me of a saying by Mencius that is important for us as medical students: "The benevolent loves others." We should love our patients sincerely, and this genuine love from within will drive us to continually improve.

Professor Connaught: Absolutely, I have been in China for around thirty to forty years, and I truly love China. I have been involved in myopia control work in rural areas of China, and throughout this process, I have loved each and every one of my patients. I always strive to provide them with the best help I can offer. I believe that a sense of responsibility and mission is an essential quality that every doctor should possess.

Interact with Students

The attending students raised questions to the two professors regarding their professional development, a comparison between domestic and international education, research directions, and how to participate in research projects. In response, Professor Connaught stated, "Currently, we have access to numerous resources. China has advanced methods for the treatment of myopia, and our research focuses on the challenges of parental acceptance of children wearing corrective glasses and the risk of eye diseases faced by highly myopic patients. The widespread promotion of eye control and prevention products is also crucial."

Professor Yu Sile invited the students present to actively participate in existing research projects, and assured them that the university would continue to provide various opportunities for research.

Professor Yu Sile, on behalf of He University in Liaoning, appointed Professor Connaught as a visiting professor at our school, and the appointment ceremony was successfully held. 

Professor Connaught's visit undoubtedly provided medical students with a valuable opportunity for academic and life experience exchange. With profound academic achievements and rich clinical experience in the field of medicine, his visit offered a rare chance for medical students to learn from him. Through interactions with the professor, students were able to gain a more intuitive understanding of cutting-edge knowledge and technologies in medicine, thereby broadening their academic horizons.
